The making · Bhadohi
An illustrated guide to eight stages of a tufted rug, from the first lines to the final inspection.

01 / 08 · Design
The design is drawn at full scale. Lines, proportions and colours are considered together before the pattern moves onto canvas.

02 / 08 · Dyeing
Yarn is prepared in the chosen palette. The colours that will sit beside one another are brought together before the work begins.

03 / 08 · Tufting
Following the design on stretched canvas, yarn is placed into the backing. The pattern grows through the repeated movement of the tufting tool.

04 / 08 · Backing
The tufted work is secured from the back. This supporting layer helps hold the yarn in place and gives the piece its structure.

05 / 08 · Shearing
The pile is trimmed to bring the surface to a consistent height. The design becomes clearer as loose ends are removed.

06 / 08 · Carving
Edges and colour boundaries are worked carefully, shaping the pile so that curves and contours can be seen and felt.

07 / 08 · Washing
The piece is washed to remove loose fibres and residue, then dried before the final checks.

08 / 08 · Final inspection
The surface, edges and backing are checked together. It is the final opportunity to attend to the small details before the piece is packed.
